Expecting a U/A certificate for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan: Producer Aanand L Rai
Mumbai: If, like most of us, you thought that R S Prasanna’s ‘Shubh Mangal Saadhan’ is a typical, run-of-the-mill love story, then the trailer will leave you shocked to the core. The film is anything but that!
‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan,’ which marks the on-screen reunion of hit pair Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar of ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ fame, is a hilarious take on the serious health hazard of erectile dysfunction. The central character Mudit, played by Ayushmann, is hopelessly in love with Sugandha (Bhumi Pednekar) but love alone will not suffice as Mudit fails to perform in bed.
The trailer, which has thrown the audience into a frenzy with its hilarious one-liners and the overall quirky content, shows how two middle-class families deal with the problem faced by Ayushmann’s character.
After unveiling the trailer, the entire star cast, along with producers and director R S Prasanna, who is making his Bollywood debut with this rom-com, took the centre stage for a fun chat with the media.
Keeping in mind the conflict between Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the makers of the recently released ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha,’ a journalist asked Rai if he had any issues with getting a nod from the Pahlaj Nihalani-led film board, to which the director-producer replied, “Till trailer no problem, we have tried to keep it as clean as possible.”
But when asked if he feels the film may get a U/A certificate, Rai immediately reacted with a ‘yes’. He said, “Yes, I am expecting a U/A certificate.”
The team of SMS-- as they jokingly called themselves—were in a chirpy mood during the interactive session but all of them maintained that the film is a family entertainer and has a message to convey. When asked about the content of the film, lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana said, “Best thing about cinema is that it is a mirror of the society. We have not made fun of someone in the film. There is a message in the film that love is beyond this need. Sometimes the bond between two people is beyond that (referring to sex).”
Bhumi agreed with him, saying, “It celebrates the imperfection of relationships, how you can win the toughest of battles when you are in love.”
This film’s a remake of Tamil comedy ‘Kalyana Samayal Saadham’ by the same director. While talking about the impact his original flick had on people, Prasanna explained, “No, it is not (based on someone he knows). I will explain. After I made this movie in Tamil, I got a lot of people writing back to me. Yes, we have used the tool of comedy, but it is a serious problem. I got messages from people saying ‘I watched the film and cried because my marriage got over because of this’. The germ of the idea is, we talk about sex and we have a lot of sex.”
Directed by R S Prasanna, ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ is slated to release on September 1.
