Bollywood's Hollywood superhero connection gone wrong and how!
We have practically grown up idolizing one or many superheroes or desiring to be one.
We have practically grown up idolizing one or many superheroes or desiring to be one. Thanks to the evolution of VFX, we are now living through our fantasy world and are able to witness our favourite superheroes kick some butt!
While Krrish looked like a cocktail of Superman and Professor Charler Xavier, Kaya (Kangana Ranaut from Krrish 3) reminded us of Mystique.
Also, Tiger's entry scene will remind you of Power Ranger's entry scene. With all that boom, bam and firework.
And now, Bollywood has yet another superflick A Flying Jatt' waiting for us. After looking at the film's teaser, we couldn't help but think of a different version of Krrish fighting with Magneto.
Now since we have already taken a trip down memory lane, remember how Hindi cinema once again tried to add the sci-fi/fantasy quotient in its film Dariya Dil'? Yes, the dream sequence (or whatever that it was) showed Govinda and Kimi Katkar dancing on the beat of Too Mera Superman' dressed up as Superman and Spiderwoman. If it helps at all, they even flew and shook a leg on cloud 9.
The trend of desi superheroes goes way back to 80s. Yes, believe it or not, in 1987 Bollywood gave us our very own desi Superman. Director B. Gupta, Superman' starred Puneet Issar as Shekhar aka Superman! This desi Superman could fly, pick up a solid car and throw it on thugs, pack some hardcore punches and living among come on superpower-less people easily.
Whereas the film's main villain (Played by Arjun Rampal) looked like a character straight out of Star Wars' series.
While Krrish looked like a cocktail of Superman and Professor Charler Xavier, Kaya (Kangana Ranaut from Krrish 3) reminded us of Mystique. On the other hand, Ra.One's costume bore resemblance to Tron Legacy's lead.
Sci-fi/Fantasy genre isn't a joke and it shouldn't be taken lightly. It's more than bad VFX work, a very recognizable uncanny superhero flying around with his one hand pointed out or an antagonist dressed in stupid flashy costume with WTH' superpowers.
We are not trying to bash Bollywood. No, after all, Indian cinema has given us many commendable films so far and continues to do so. However, let's just accept it. Superhero fiction isn't Bollywood's genre and whenever it has tried to ace this game, it has failed miserably; giving us, Superhero film lovers some pretty bad nightmares to deal with.
Bollywood has time and again gained inspiration' from west's superhero game and has more than once fallen flat on its face. We have n number of films to back that statement up; Ra. One, Krrish, Drona ring any bells?
We have religiously followed our favourite super squad, saw our heroes save the world from the evil bad*ss supervillains while having an out of world experience, thanks to the graphics and rawness in Hollywood superflicks. But can we say the same about Bollywood; the cinema hub that hosts all kinds of films?
