Relive some Victoriana romance

It not only marked a significant change in the way Europe dressed, but had an impact on how the rest of the world dresses even today.

The Victorian era, spanning from 1837 to Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, is easily the most elaborate and influential era when it comes to fashion. It not only marked a significant change in the way Europe dressed, but had an impact on how the rest of the world dresses even today.

From voluminous skirts and ornate necklines to laced high collars and decollete dresses, aristocratic women had a sartorial sophistication about them.

Several contemporary designers, including the likes of Alexander McQueen and Chanel have been tapping into the dark romance surrounding them and giving it their own modern twist with voluminous sleeves, demure high-neck ruffled blouses and plenty of lace, velvet and chiffon.

It was in the Victorian era that embellished shawls and throws gained popularity too, and they have now become a global must-have for every elegantly styled woman.

If you’re planning on donning some Victoriana for an evening do, be careful not to overdo it. The key to the era’s modern fashion resonance lies in its ability to complement minimalist chic. Go for one articulate piece, keeping the rest of your look streamlined and modern.
