Falling of teeth caused by stress? Dentist reveals truth

Find out what the experts have to say.

It is common knowledge that stress can increase hair loss and increase one's risk of developing serious diseases. But did you know stress could cause your teeth to fall out?

Health experts and dentists say yes it can happen even though it is extremely rare, according to the Daily Mail. Dr Matthew Messina, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association told the Daily Mail that stress-causing teeth to fall does not mean it will happen or happen overnight.

What you do need to do is pay attention to your body, he says. Bleeding gums, teeth grinding or teeth hurting are warning signs to watch for, he cautions. Dr Messina reveals the main cause for tooth loss in adults is periodontal disease, which is lined to stress.

Exposure to psychosocial stress is a risk factor for a variety of health issues like coronary heart disease. "Stress can cause a variety of health issues that could potentially lead to something as dramatic as losing your teeth, however it's not likely to happen if you're taking care of your teeth," Dr Heidi Hanna, the executive director of the American Institute of Stress is quoted is saying by the Daily Mail.

Both doctors recommend people see a dentist if they are concerned about their oral health.
