Decoding mental health: Here's what you need to know
What is Mental health? According to Mousumi Kar, Psychologist and Wellness consultant it is something that is vital at every stage of life, from childhood, adolescence through adulthood.
“Mental health is a level of psychological well being or an absence of mental illness. It also helps determine how we handle stress, related to others and make choices.”
One of the most common forms of mental health issue according to the expert is depression. According to Kar, depression can occur at every stage in life. She says one of the most important things while tackling depression lies in identifying it.
“It is vital to identify the signs of depression early and admit yourself for a medical treatment (psychological or psychiatric treatment as per the intensity of the depression). Scientifically, we can identify the major leading causes for depression.
These include:
- Brain and biological conditions
- Genetical condition
- Stressful life events and coping skills
- Other medical conditions
Speaking about combating mental health issues, she adds, “Engage for counselling, therapy, medications or alternative therapies or remedies. Set well planned daily activities (adequate sleep, proper food, exercise and a healthy lifestyle).”
One of the major causes of depression nowadays is unhappy workplaces and according to the psychologist, communication is the key to remaining happy at office.
She says, “Always open the communication channels. Maintain a good support network at your workplace. Share your thoughts and have good friends. Organise and structure work deliverables and time management. Don’t set up a very high and unrealistic aspiration level.”
She further adds, “A person can be content by setting his or her life goals realistically. Since, there are lots of moments in life that might give or cause stress, the person should indulge in stress reliever activities such as spending quality time with family members, sharing views and feelings with family. Be around positive people, be occupied with healthy activities like music and dance, traveling, going outdoors as per your interest. Take one step at a time by setting small milestones and celebrating those moments.”
Finally, she shares the five ways of combating depression, be at office or while dealing with your personal demons.
- “Understand the importance of overcoming the negative thinking. It is vital to change your perceptions and look for good things around.
- Do fun things and treat yourself.
- Set realistic aspiration levels.
- Depression can occur again. The person should be conscious of the signs of the depression if it emerges again.
- Help each other. Think of your life as a journey to wellness.”
