Lab-grown sperm could enable infertile men to have children

Statistics show that around 15 percent of couples are infertile and one third of these cases are due to the sterility of the male partner.

In what can be termed as a major scientific breakthrough, researchers have been able to successfully grow sperm in the lab that could be used for helping infertile men to have biological children. Scientists in China, according to the Telegraph, carried out the experiment.

Researchers fused embryonic mice stem cells into sperm cells, which were implanted into eggs. It was then from these eggs that healthy mouse pups were born. Now scientists are hopeful that the same technology would be helpful for men who could not naturally produce sperm. Research studies show that a major cause of male infertility is the failure of germ cells on the testes to divide – a process called meiosis – to become functional sperm cells.
