Nellore: A jolly trip to swim in a village tank ended in tragedy for two young girls belonging to Nachhukuru in Vedurukuppam mandal of Chittoor district on Monday. The girls identified as Darshini, 7, and Hemalatha, 12, went to Reddy Cheruvu (tank) for swimming along with some of their friends on Monday afternoon.
Darshini drowned first when she ventured into the water for swimming. Hemalatha followed her in a bid to save her friend but also went down into the water. Friends of the girls ran back to the village and alerted the elders about the incident. Parents of Darshini, Chinnama Reddy and Bhargavi and parents of Hemalatha, Reddappa and Thulasi, rushed to the tank, but it was too late.
Both the girls met their their watery grave by the time parents reached the spot. Police and revenue officials elicited information on the incident from locals.
