Hyderabad: A husband in Ranga Reddy district tried to kill his wife earlier this week as he was unhappy with her complexion.
Prabhu, who had married Laxmi around three years ago was so unhappy with his wife’s dark complexion that he would often tell her to kill herself. On Tuesday he and his brother Yellaiah tried to kill her. The two were arrested on Thursday.
Laxmi, 23, from Dharma-pur village in Dharur mandal, who was a daily labourer, had gotten married to Prabhu, 29, a native of Laxmipur village in Bantwaram mandal. He is also a labourer.
Since their marriage, Prabhu had been complaining about her dark complexion. Fed up with the husband’s constant torture, she had even approached the women’s police station and lodged multiple complaints.
“He was given counselling after which he promised to change, but it did not happen,” said Bantwaram in-charge sub inspector Nagabhushanam.
Laxmi had approached the women’s police station thrice but Prabhu did not mend his ways. He even asked her to commit suicide, threatening to kill her if she did not do so.
On Tuesday Prabhu and his brother Yellaiah attacked her. “While Yellaiah kept a watch outside, Prabhu came in and tried to throttle her. She raised an alarm and neighbours rushed to her rescue,” said Mr Nagabhushanam.
Prabhu and Yellaiah fled from the spot after the neighbours arrived.
A case of attempt to murder and harassment was registered and the duo was arrested on Thursday and produced before court.
