The NGT bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim was dealing with two applications by Readiness for Empowerment through Legitimate Action.

Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal at Delhi on Thursday said that it would considered the various directions sought by the petitioners with regard to alleged illegal sand quarrying in TS and AP during the final hearing. The NGT bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim was dealing with two applications by Readiness for Empowerment through Legitimate Action (RELA) from Telangana state and another from Polavaram in AP seeking a ban on the use of heavy machinery in sand mining which damages the flood banks the river bed and results in destruction of ecology besides causing pollution.

Mr K. Sravan Kumar, counsel for the petitioners, submitted that though the NGT had stayed the use of heavy machinery for sand quarrying in water bodies, both the states were violating the orders. While posting the case to January 17, for final hearing, the bench said in view of the interim stay still in force, the petitioners can make fresh application if they need any further interim relief.
