Action on University of Hyderabad students relaxed

Final verdict on the suspension of ten students following an issue that arose when a girl was found in a boys' hostel.

HYDERABAD: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) authorities released their final verdict on the suspension of ten students following an issue that arose when a girl was found in a boys’ hostel.

The executive council of the UoH decided to maintain the punishment meted out to three students, including the girl, and suspend them for a period of two years. The punishment awarded to seven other students was relaxed and their suspension period was reduced from six months to six weeks.

According to university officials, the executive council took serious cognisance of the actions of three students and confirmed the previous order. “Some students who have been awarded punishments have even submitted in writing that they reject the University’s rules, including the hostel manual. Such incidents cannot be taken lightly,” said a university official.

Athira Unni, the female student who has been suspended for two years, says, “The EC’s decision is final, and it was expected. The same happened when Rohith Vemula’s suspension was presented before them. They did not change their decision.”

The students who have been suspended will not have access to hostel facilities on campus when they re-join the varsity. They are also expected to give an undertaking that they will always abide by the rules of the university, including tho-se mentioned in the hostel rulebook.
