Water logging leaves safari enclosure closed

Janardhan Reddy. GHMC commissioner, had visited the zoo on Sunday morning to take stock of the situation.

Hyderabad: The safari enclosure at the Nehru Zoological Park remained closed on Sunday due to the heavy rains on Saturday. Earlier, it was closed for two days following a heavy rainfall on October 2.

Zoo officials said that Saturday’s rainfall lead to the overflow of Mir Alam tank, which resulted in water logging in the safari enclosure.

“We have closed the safari enclosure to ensure that none of our animals are affected due to inundated water. The steady rainfall is leading to frequent water stagnation and Mir Alam tank, which is old, has already developed cracks,” says a zoo official.

Janardhan Reddy. GHMC commissioner, had visited the zoo on Sunday morning to take stock of the situation.

The zoo officials, who accompanied the commissioner, said that a better system is needed to end water stagnation in enclosures. The officials also briefed the commissioner about the critical areas which need urgent attention.

Though a new pipeline installed earlier this year helped minimise water-logging, littering by visitors has choked the pipeline.
