Hyderabad: May 2016 recorded as month with most number of rainy days
Hyderabad: Hyderabad had the most number of rainy days in recorded history in May this year. The month, which is considered to be peak summer, saw 14 cm of rain. It had 13 rainy days out of 31. The highest maximum temperature in summer was 43ºC in April.
“The upper air trough ran from Vidharbha to South Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Rayalaseema till May 13. And from mid May onwards, a low pressure area was formed over southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the Sri Lanka coast; it intensified into a depression on May 17 and a deep depression from May 18 to 22 as a result of Cyclone Roanu. The cyclone was active till May 22 and crossed the Bangladesh coast. These factors resulted in more rainy days in May 2016,” said Met department officials.
Hyderabad broke 10-year record on May 10
Hyderabad had the most number of rainy days in recorded history in May this year. The city recorded a whopping 75.4 mm of rain on the morning of May 6, exceeding the 10-year highest rainfall record in 24 hours. The earlier record was 28.5 mm of rain on May 9, 2006. May 6 figures had almost touched the all-time high of 79.3 mm of May 24, 1978.
The highest maximum temperature recorded in summer (March, April, May) in the 2016 season was at the Hyderabad Observatory at 43ºC on April 14, 2016 — the hottest day in April in 43 years. The all-time record for April is 43.3ºC, on April 30, 1973.
