Vice-President M Hamid Ansari backs quota for poor Muslims

Backwardness among Muslims is a reality and it should be dealt with by both the states and the Centre with a human face,â€Hamid Ansari said.

Hyderabad: All citizens, including minorities, should have a feeling of responsibility and achieve their rights. All states and the Centre should take the lead in promoting their welfare, including reservations, Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari said on Wednesday.

He was releasing a book in Urdu on the quest for Muslim reservations in AP and TS by Mr Shabbir Ali, Leader of Opposition in the TS Legislative Council, in New Delhi.

Dr Ansari said though minorities in many states had expressed their concern over low reservations, the governments are not moving on the issue.

Appreciating the Centre’s Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas initiative, he asked how could the backward classes come on par with others if the persons of upper caste were two steps ahead every time. “Backwardness among Muslims is a reality and it should be dealt with by both the states and the Centre with a human face,” he said.

Mr Shabbir Ali narrated the 10-year saga for reservations for Muslims and how the government of late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy had implemented it.
