Chennai: 24-year-old drowns in YMCA swimming pool

Police said the youth was not very familiar with swimming and was advised to stay the in shallow side of the pool.

Chennai: Hours after an 8-year-old girl died in a private swimming pool on Saturday morning, a 24-year-old man drowned in YMCA pool in Nandanam on Saturday night. Police identified the deceased as Balasubramanian, a bank employee from Neelankarai.

He was working in an backoffice of an international bank in Porur and had gone to the YMCA Nandanam facility for swimming along with his friends on Saturday evening.

Police said the youth was not very familiar with swimming and was advised to stay the in shallow side of the pool. The water level there was around four feet. He was trying to be familiar with water when he reportedly drifted into the deeper end. His friend, who was swimming on the other side, suddenly noticed that Bala was missing, police said.

Friends and trainers together took Bala out of the water and to the nearest hospital after fist aid. Though the Saidapet hospital gave treatment, the medical team suggested taking him to Royapettah hospital where he was declared dead.
Saidapet police said that they were looking into the incident. “We have to see if he was under supervision of any staff or not. We will have to check if he had any health problems,” the police said.

Only on Saturday morning, 8-year-old girl PB Andrea, a class III student, had died in a private swimming pool in J.J. Nagar. She was attending a swimming class when the fatal incident took place.
