Telangana: Quota is against Islam, says BJP
Hyderabad: BJP Floor Leader in Telangana State Assembly G. Kishen Reddy on Sunday called the Muslim Reservation Bill unconstitutional and said that reservations based on religion was rejected by the Constituent Assembly while framing the Constitution. Opposing the Bill in the House, Mr Reddy rejected Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s contention that quota Bill was not based on religion.
He said that a notification issued by the BC Commission — in newspapers inviting representations from public — had clearly stated that the reservation was intended for Muslims only.
“By specifically calling backward classes among Muslims is a clear indication that everything was done keeping the religion as an important aspect which is against constitution,” Mr Reddy argued. He said Islam does not subscribe to any castes or group in their religion and it is strange only the government is finding castes and groups among Muslims.
“Providing reservations is even against Islam. When there are no caste or group in Islam, where is the question of certain groups or castes getting discriminated,” he lamented. He also found fault with the government for clubbing hike in ST reservations which is Constitutionally guaranteed with the Muslim quota which is purely political.
