Hyderabad High Court grills state on borewells

The bench inquired about the incident in Guntur where a two-year-old boy fell into a borewell on August 15.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court asked the TS government what measures it had taken, in line with Supreme Court guidelines, to prevent small children falling into borewells

The court directed the principal secretaries of revenue, panchayat raj and home department to file affidavits detailing the number of permissions granted for digging borewells and what action had taken against those who abandoned the borewells.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Rangana-than and Justice J. Uma Devi was dealing with a PIL by High Court advocate B. Prakash, seeking to hold officers and people concerned responsible for failing to cover unfilled and defunct borewells.

The bench asked the home secretary whether a chargesheet had been filed into the death of Chinnari, a toddler at Vikarabad who fell into a 40-foot uncovered borewell recently.

The bench inquired about the incident in Guntur where a two-year-old boy fell into a borewell on August 15. Mr Satya Prasad, senior counsel for the petitioner, said that the boy had been rescued. The bench adjourned the case to August 30.
