JNU row: HC adjourns hearing on Kanhaiya's bail plea till February 29

HC also asks police to conduct remand proceedings of JNU students Umar and Anirban secretly so that are not harmed.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of the bail plea of JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar till February 29. Kanhaiya was arrested on sedition charges and sent to judicial custody till March 2.

During the hearing, the High Court observed that safety must be ensured during the proceedings to Kanhaiya and another JNU student Umar Khalid, who have been booked on charges of sedition.

The Delhi Police told the court that they need Kanhaiya's remand in order to confront him with the other 'accused'. The High Court said it is the statutory right of the investigating agency at this stage to ask for a remand.

Earlier today, two JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, accused of sedition, surrendered before Delhi police.

Here are the latest updates:

12.30 pm: The Delhi Police in their status report mentioned that if petitioner Kanhaiya Kumar was released on bail, it would have send a wrong signal to student community across country.

11.20 am: The Delhi High Court will give its directions regarding the location at which Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhhatacharya will be produced after consulting with the concerned department.

11.15 am: High Court asked the police to conduct remand proceedings secretly so that arrested JNU students -- Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya -- were not harmed.

11.10 am: Delhi High Court adjourned the hearing on JNU students' union President Kanhaiya Kumar's bail plea till February 29.

11.00 am: Delhi Police filed a status report in the High Court after interrogating JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who have been booked on charges of sedition. The report submitted by the police includes the alleged anti-national slogans which were raised in the varsity campus, the video of the incident that took place on February 9 and also accounts of the eyewitnesses.

9.30 am: Umar Khalid’s lawyer has called on the Delhi Police to ensure his safety to avoid any untoward incidents. "It is the Magistrate and the police's duty to ensure Umar's security so that what happened with Kanhaiya, does not happen with him," Khalid's counsel Kamini Jaiswal said.

7.00 am: JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who surrendered before the police around midnight, were questioned for at least 5 hours. A medical check was conducted on both the students.

12.10 am: JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya surrendered before the police, hours after the Delhi High Court refused to grant them protection from arrest.
