Thrissur: The members of the police association in the Kerala State Police Academy in Thirssur heaved a sigh of relief after the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also handling the home portfolio, has indicated that he wanted to end the beef controversy in the academy.
Mr Pinarayi made it clear that Kerala is having a tradition of people eating the food of their own choice and no change will be allowed in that culture. The remark was in response to the unofficial ban on serving beef prevailing in the canteen of the Police Academy in Thrissur.
The matter has assumed an urgency following the Inspector General of Police Academy Sureshraj Purohit ordering a probe into the incident of serving beef in the canteen the other day.
The IG has also threatened to take disciplinary action in case of anybody serving beef in the canteen of the academy. The matter of serving beef in the canteen became a controversial subject following Purohit imposing a ban on serving beef after he assumed charge as the IG of the academy. Although the Police
Association has filed a complaint demanding the restoration of beef as part of the menu in the academy the IG has not allowed it. The staff members aligned with the left leaning association of the police has served beef a day after the LDF has scored a victory in the state elections on May 19.
The high officials came to know about the beef feast only after more than 100 persons consumed the same. The IG has summoned the officials responsible for the running of the canteen and sought the details of the persons behind the action. The association leaders are planning to submit a memorandum to the new home minister against the action of the IG.
