Zamorin's Guruvayoorappan College magazine burns on street but goes viral online

Alleging anti-Hindu remarks in the magazine, a group of ABVP activists burned the copies of the college magazine on Friday.

KOZHIKODE: The burning of a college magazine has kicked up a new row in Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan College, Kozhikode. The magazine, Vishwavikhyatha Theri scheduled to have released in the 2014-15 academic year, came out a year late, to the wrath of a student outfit.

Alleging anti-Hindu remarks and “normalisation of crimes” by terrorists, a group of ABVP activists burnt the copies of the magazine on Friday. The act of burning has, in effect, given attention to the magazine, now an online hit.

“The magazine, which should have been released a year ago, was released on Monday to accommodate the whims and fancies of the SFI activists, who wanted to promote their ideologies. They incorporated the recent JNU and Hyderabad University issues to the magazine. This is a continuation of the events that led to the JNU arrests. Hindu gods are placed in bad light and the words used are uncultured,” said Sreehari V.V., a third-year degree student and ABVP district convener.

Staff editor Anil Varma, who admits the delay in its release was a fault, insists that its contents were an attempt to track the history of the suppressed lower caste.

Student editor Sree Shemeem said they were trying to discuss the politics of bad words (Theri) in the society. There were protests from a section of ABVP workers saying that the article was against the judiciary.
