Janata Dal (Secular) is keen to build platform with Janata Dal (United)

One believes that the state unit should join hands with the 17 party alliance of which Shard Yadav is the national convenor, to fight the BJP.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state leadership of JD(S) is keen to bring around JD(U) on a common platform to fight against Narendra Modi’s government's policies which have sounded the “death knell” for farming sector. The crisis in farm sector is a common issue on which the two parties with farmers base in different parts of the state, could come together to fight against the BJP’s anti-farmer policies along with the communal agenda of the Sangh Parivar. “Our aim is to have a broader front to raise farmers’ issues. We have no problem in JDU becoming part of LDF. Our views have already been conveyed to the LDF leadership. But at the moment the major issue to be highlighted is the crisis in farm sector and the joint struggles of farmers could gradually pave the way for political realignment,” said JD(S) leader K. Krishnankutty.

Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact which will be signed soon, will spell doom for farmers, he said adding that it was the right time to put up a strong resistance against such anti farmer agreements by mobilising farmers in a big way in the state. However, the JDU leadership has not made up its mind about the future political course in Kerala post the split in the party at the national level. There are two streams of thinking in the party. One believes that the state unit should join hands with the 17 party alliance of which Shard Yadav is the national convenor, to fight the BJP. However, the other view which reportedly has the backing of party supremo M. P. Veerendrakumar, is to have an independent regional party.

“There is no discussion in our party at the moment on our future course. The party leadership will surely explore all possibilities. But one thing is clear that the party will always stand with secular forces,” said JDU national general secretary leader Varughese George. A section of national leaders led by general secretary Sheikh P. Harris has already expressed solidarity with Sharad Yadav.
