Tiruvannamalai youth falls critically ill

Admitted at around 5:30 pm on Saturday, the youngster was brought in with low heart rate, low blood pressure and vomiting.

Chennai: Vincent Prabhakar (23), who belongs to the family of six from Thandarai village in Tiruvannamalai, all of whom died following similar symptoms over the course of a month, is in a critical condition at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).

Admitted at around 5:30 pm on Saturday, the youngster was brought in with low heart rate, low blood pressure and vomiting.

“Though he is conscious, his pulse and blood pressure are being maintained only by drugs. We have sent his blood and urine samples for testing and are expecting the results shortly,” said Dr S. Mayilvahanan, Director and Head of the Department, Institute of Internal Medicine.

Found to have liver problems, Vincent is being administered supportive care in room 211 of the Intensive Medical Care Unit where he is admitted. The doctors have ensured that he is continuously monitored.

On October 31, when 65-year-old Christha died, health department officials insisted on a post-mortem because five of her relatives had died that month and were buried even before officials could reach the spot with symptoms of vomiting, fatigue and mild fever leading to quick deterioration of pulse, heart rate and finally death. The victims were aged seven to 75.
