Hyderabad: Couple seeks mercy killing of daughter
Hyderabad: A couple from Jagathgirigutta has approached the State Human Rights Commission asking permission for a euthanasia procedure on their 11-year-old daughter, who is suffering from a rare liver disease.
N. Ramchandra Reddy, who works at a sweat shop, and Shyama, a homemaker, have two children — Harshitha, 11, and Satyasheela, 8. Harshitha developed jaundice five months ago and medicines were having no impact.
Last month, when they brought her to the city’s Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, they had her tested. Doctors said a surgery could cost up to Rs 25 lakh.
Later, when they contacted Care hospitals, doctors there had similar observations. “We have spent nearly Rs 3 lakh this month. But there has been no change. My wife is also sick and we are just not able to take care of our child,” said Ramchandra Reddy.
Unable to bear expenses, they have filed a petition with the SHRC, seeking euthanasia. The Commission is set to take a decision on Friday. “We request the Commission to help my child or allow for a merciful death. We want our child but we are absolutely helpless,” Shyama added.
