Vijayawada: A mechanised fishing boat caught fire causing minor burn injuries to two crew members at Nizampatnam harbour in Bapatla district on Tuesday morning.
According to police and fisheries authorities, the boat was getting ready for a voyage into the sea. There were five crew members in the boat. Some were preparing food by using a domestic gas cylinder while the others were getting ready to fill diesel in the fuel tank.
“An electric short circuit might have caused the fire as the boat operators use wires for fixing the generators and other gadgets without following safety norms. The stocks of diesel might have caused the fire to spread rapidly and the entire boat was destroyed.
The injured crew members were shifted to the government hospital in Tenali for medical treatment and their condition was stable. Bapatla fisheries joint director Suresh said the boat was not insured.
