Relief from heat wave likely IMD predicts rain for AP from today

VISHAKHAPATNAM: Parts of Andhra Pradesh may get slight relief from heat wave conditions as the weatherman has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds for five days from Friday over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

IMD predicted a wind speed of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places in these regions. The state is reeling under heat wave conditions for the last two weeks with temperatures registering 40 degrees C and above. Weather office on Wednesday predicted heat wave conditions in parts of the Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, Kakinada, Konaseema, NTR, Palnadu, Bapatla and Guntur districts.

Kurnool city and Nandyal recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees C each, the highest in the state on Tuesday. It was followed by Tuni (42.5), Anantapur (42.4), YSR Kadapa (42), Nandigama (41.8), Visakhapatnam (41.6), Jangamaheswara Puram (41.6), Tirupati (40.6), and Amaravati (40.2). Many parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh witnessed heat wave conditions on Tuesday.

Dr Sagili Karunasagar, IMD- Amaravati scientist, said some relief was expected from the heat waves with the onset of thunderstorms for five days due to a trough over north coastal Andhra Pradesh. This might bring down the mercury marginally, it said.

However, he said, the relief is temporary as a fresh (second) spell of heat wave conditions over parts of AP should commence after the storms. Rayalaseema region, not affected by the heat wave so far, would witness a rise in the temperature and subsequent heat wave from next week, Dr Karunasagar stated.
