Tamil Nadu CM flags off 200 new buses

She also presented 25 jeeps worth Rs 1.46 lakhs for the use of transport department offices.

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday flagged off 200 buses for various transport corporations in the state, besides presenting vehicle keys and cheques for common livelihood groups.

The 200 buses worth Rs 46.41 crores would be distributed between the various government transport corporations and three of them would be operated as women’s special in R.K. Nagar, the constituency of the Chief Minister.

She also presented 25 jeeps worth Rs 1.46 lakhs for the use of transport department offices. A total of 118 buses would be operated for MTC fleet, besides 11 for Villupuram transport corporation and four for Salem transport corporation.

The allotment for Coimbatore would be 16 and for Kumbakonam transport corporation, two buses would be allocated, besides 12 for Madurai.

The southern district of Tirunelveli would get 37 buses, the highest after Chennai.
Transport minister M.R. Vijayabaskar, Chief Secretary P. Rama Mohana Rao, Advisor to government Sheela Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary of Transport department Chandrakant Kamble and MTC Managing Director V. Krishnamoorthy were present during the flag off function.

The Chief Minister sanctioned funds for 50 common livelihood groups involved in tea cultivation in Nilgiris district to buy vehicles and set up green tea procurement centre.

An official press release here said Rs 3.48 crore had been allocated for the groups and the Chief Minister presented vehicle keys and cheques for five members.

The groups involved in tea cultivation were formed in 2015-2016 and registered with the Indian Teas Board. The groups are functioning under the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Women’s Development, the release added.
