Gangai Amaran hits campaign trail in Chennai

Despite his high profile status, BJP candidate and popular Tamil film music composer Gangai Amaran appears to very humble in seeking people's mandate.

Chennai: He mingles freely with the public and appeals to them to help the ‘Lotus’ bloom. Despite his high profile status, BJP candidate and popular Tamil film music composer Gangai Amaran appears to very humble in seeking people’s mandate.

Mr. Amaran, accompanied by party members, goes around the RK Nagar Assembly constituency canvassing for votes as “one among the people” as he says. “I firmly believe in directly approaching the people,” he explains, waving his hand at the electorate and appealing to them with folded hands to elect him as their next MLA.

Interestingly, the catchphrase coined by BJP senior and Union Minister of State for road transport, highways and shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan – “Kazhagangal Illatha Tamizhagam, Kavalai Illatha Tamizhagam” (Tamil Nadu devoid of AIADMK, DMK and worry-free state) is being used as the slogan by the BJP members during the campaign.

The saffron party is buoyant over a divided People’s Welfare Front, and the DMK not nominating a “strong contender” say sources in the BJP. “Our party has nominated Gangai Amaran to show that we were not isolating any particular community. We believe in inclusiveness,” BJP state president Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan said.

Flaying the DMK for the “political crisis” in the state, she claimed that the opposition DMK could have helped in defeating the trust vote on the floor of the Assembly had its members maintained calm. “Moreover, the DMK is not showing much interest in the R.K Nagar Assembly by-election. And with opposition building up against the AIADMK, our party has high hopes of winning the by-election,” she added while addressing her party’s executive meeting.
