TRS puts district level committees on hold

The reorganisation of the party structure started on September 2 with the constitution of village and ward-level committees till Sept. 12

HYDERABAD: The ongoing organisational restructuring of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is completed without the constitution of district committees and appointment of district party presidents.

The reorganisation of the party structure started on September 2 with the constitution of village and ward-level committees till September 12. Similarly, mandal and town committees were set up between September 12 and 20.
As per the original schedule, the party president and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has to announce district committees and district party presidents from September 21 to 30.

The organisational restructuring of party should conclude with the election of the state party president. However, the party has completed the organisational restructuring only from village-level to Mandal-level and now is taking up election of state party president directly in the party's plenary meeting to be held in Hyderabad on October 25.

With this, the hopes of a large number of aspirants to secure posts at district-level have been dashed. There is a huge competition to grab these posts as TRS leadership has decided to restore district-level committees and district party presidents after a gap of nearly five years. Aspirants lobbied hard to get these posts.

However, ‘group politics’ within the party is said to have forced party leadership to drop plans on restructuring party at district level. Ministers and MLAs in respective districts are strongly opposing the constitution of district committees and district party presidents as it will create alternate “power centres” in districts. They fear that they will lose their political dominance in respective districts if new district committees and district presidents are appointed. They do not want to lose their hold in respective districts and constituencies at this stage when Assembly polls are just two years away.

Ministers and MLAs reportedly argued that the TDP and the Congress paid the price by constituting district level committees which led to infighting within the parties and tussle between committees and elected representatives and TRS should not take such risks. They have been calling the shots in respective districts for the past five years and they do not want any political confrontation with the emergence of new leaders.

However, TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, while speaking to media on Tuesday at Telangana Bhavan, said the Chief Minister would take a call on how to proceed on district committees after his re-election as president in the party plenary on October 25.
