Fishing boat catches fire off Vizag; crew rescued

Visakhapatnam: A fishing boat with seven crew members caught fire early Tuesday morning, approximately 28 nautical miles south of Visakhapatnam. All crew members have been rescued safely and brought back to the Vizag fishing harbour.

The crew have been identified as Vasupalli Raju (36), Vasupalli Appanna (58), Vasupalli Dasilu (41), Vasupalli Apparao (41), Ganagalla Yerikodu (40), Mylapalli Yerrayya (50) and Ganagalla Poliraju (20).

According to Vasupalli Janakiram, president of Andhra Pradesh Mechanised Fishing Boat Operators Association, as night time fishing is more productive for catching fish and prawns during this season, the crew set sail on Monday night.

They encountered trouble when on Tuesday morning, the boat captain noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. Reacting swiftly, everyone abandoned their mechanised boat and began swimming. Another boat fishing in the vicinity spotted and rescued them.

Janakiram estimated the damage caused at ₹33 lakh. The rescued crewmen have file an insurance claim with the fisheries commissioner.

A case has been registered. The district collector will investigate the incident before insurance funds are released.
