Caught on stump mic! MS Dhoni's razor-sharp advice to Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav
Chennai: MS Dhoni did it again. With the bat, with the wicketkeeping gloves and also with his streetsmart, brutally honest and yet effective comments from behind the wickets as India defeated Australia in the opening ODI at Chepauk on Sunday.
While there were Virat Kohli and other Indian and Australian superstars on the field in Chennai during the first ODI, Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings’ captain and local favourite – was the flavour of the season as he walked out to bat amidst a thunderous applause at his second home.
As India struggled with early loss of wickets, Dhoni and Hardik Pandya made sure the team reached a healthy total of 281 after electing to bat.
However, it was Dhoni, the wicketkeeper, who was at his verbal best as Australia commenced their chase. There was no shortage of wisecracks, streetsmart advices and at times, even a dig at Indian bowlers; Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal; as they erred in length.
Kuldeep, who dismissed ever so dangerous David Warner, during the post-match show, stated that how Dhoni told him to go about bowling against the Australian opener.

Meanwhile, stump mic caught Dhoni dishing out some gems to the young wrist spinners.
“Woh maarane waala daal naa; andar yaa baahar koi bhi (Bowl the one where he tries to hit, turning in or away, anything is fine)”. There was also this “Ghumane waala daal ghumane waala (Bowl the one that turns)” as Chahal and Kuldeep operated.
Dhoni was audibly not pleased as Glenn Maxwell went after Kuldeep, hammering 3 sixes and a four to yield 22 runs in an over. While Dhoni wanted Kuldeep to toss the ball up and throw it wide. Kuldeep bowled in the line of the stumps as the Big Show went hammer and tongs.
Dhoni’s “Stump pe mat dal (don’t bowl in the line of the stumps)” and “Arre baahar daal, isko itna aage nahi (bowl wider (outside the off stump) and not this full)” was caught on stump mic as Kuldeep erred.
Then, it was Chahal’s turn to get some Dhoni tips. While the leggie did not get it right immediately, he was smart enough to make quick alterations. Dhoni’s banter too went from “Tu bhi nahin sunta hai kya (You also won’t listen)?” to “Aise, aise dalo (bowl it like this)”.
Chahal eventually had the better off Maxwell as he threw one wide to end Maxwell’s innings after the Australian batsman was caught at the long-on.
Earlier this year, when India was in West Indies, Dhoni was also heard poking R Ashwin when he missed out an easy run-out opportunity as he was busy appealing.
“Ball dekho, Ash. Kahan dhyaan hai? (Look at the ball, Ashwin. Where are you lost?)” Dhoni had said.
In the same game, he also heard advising Kohli not to waste a DRS.
Stump mic caught Dhoni saying, “Leg stump ke bahar ja rahi hai. Review kharab ho jayega aur kuch nahin. (It is missing leg stump. We will waste one review; nothing else.)”
Dhoni, in the same match, was also heard telling the young chinaman bowler Kuldeep what the batsman – Rovman Powell – will do. Dhoni said, “Yeh (Rovman Powell) aage nahin badega. Andar se hi marega. (He will not step out. He will try to hit big from the crease).”
