Your next Android phone will locate you on the map with more precision

Broadcom is working on chips with enhanced GPS detection but use lesser power.

There are often times when you lose signal in the midst of traffic while navigating to a new restaurant. In those times, you often wish your phone to get the best of GPS signals. Well-known chipmaker Broadcom has announced that they are working on a chip with better GPS signal reception.

The Californian chipmaker is claiming that their upcoming next-generation mobile chips will detect your location on the grid within 30 cm of accuracy instead of 5 metres. These chips will use new GPS signals to boost accuracy.

The next generation chips are also expected to use half the power than today’s mobile chips while managing to retain signal strength in cities despite strong tower interference. This should be good for urban dwellers who need strong signal coverage while commuting to work.

This seems to be a tall claim by Broadcom as they generally tend to cater to budget smartphones than flagship ones. If they manage to bring next-generation efficient chipset technology to affordable smartphones, then it would enhance the user experience on the whole.
