Motorola finally unveils the Moto Z2 Play with mind blowing Moto Mods
When the Moto Z range was unveiled last year, it was assumed to disrupt the smartphone market with the introduction of Moto Mods, which it didn’t. Instead, it was considered a very good phone for non-techie people with a big battery and a good design. However, Motorola saw a lot of potential in the Moto Mods and decided to show the world that it was more than just an expensive gimmick with the launch of the new Moto Z2 Play and an updates line-up of Moto mods.
Let’s talk about the handset first. The Z2 Play is a mid-range handset, just like the previous one. However, it has an upgraded processor, more RAM and an upgraded camera sensor. The phone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 chipset and partners with 3/4GB of RAM to handle everyday tasks. The new 12MP camera sensor comes with a dual-pixel auto-focus technology and has an aperture of f/1.7, on par with the Samsung Galaxy S7’s unit.
There’s also a 5MP camera with dual-LED flash The battery, however, gets a downgrade to 3,000 mAh battery, which promises to deliver around 30 hours of stand-by time between full charges. The display is a full HD AMOLED unit with redesigned fingerprint sensor housing at the bottom. The phone will ship with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and will have certain software tricks under its sleeves like blue-light filter and new voice controls for getting basic information. The phone will start at $499 for the 64GB variant, which is roughly around Rs 32,143, making it substantially expensive than the outgoing model.
As for the Moto Mods, last year’s battery extension mods have got incremental upgrades. The TurboPower mod gets Motorola’s Turbo charging feature to charge its 3,490 mAh battery and use a USB-Type C port to charge itself at 15W speeds.
The GamePad mod attaches to the phone and provides all gaming controls on identical pads to both sides of the phone. The GamePad has its own 1,035 mAh battery and was developed in conjunction with Lenovo’s gaming division.
The SoundBoost 2 Mod gets water resistant abilities and come in choice of three colours. The mod also supports 10W fast wireless charging, which is a thoughtful addition.
Both the phone and the mods are only available in the US as of now. Motorola hasn’t rolled out a timeline for the device’s arrival on the Indian shores.
