Want to see an art gallery in augmented reality? iOS 11 can make it happen
Since Google unveiled its Project Tango for the Android platform, the world has wanted to see the same on the iOS platform. Apple put an end to their wait by announcing a special AR kit for the latest iOS 11 at this year’s WWDC17. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before we expected to see an app utilising the arrangement. Dan Monaghan has already published an app on his website to demonstrate the power of iOS 11’s AR kit.
The concept of the app is simple – it takes multiple photos in succession through an iPhone’s camera and then displays all of them suspended in the air when looked through the app’s camera interface.

Monaghan says that “It’s the beginning of much more, the demo is just the beginning of an iOS App that will do a whole bunch more. Currently, it’s just a tool for taking very weird photos. It’s smooth, running 60fps with 150 photo frustums sitting there easily. My first real “app” - and it actually does something, it’s a great feeling watching someone use it, some people are really engrossed in the visual experience, there is usually no stuttering or latency, which for camera tracking even in night conditions is great with the contrasty colours.”
Right now, the app is only good for having fun or doing time pass. However, this opens the gates to endless possibilities. Who knows, you could probably go through your Instagram feed like this, with all your food or cat photos suspended in the space. This also shows that Apple’s AR kit is capable of rendering better graphics than the cartoonish ones from Google’s Tango.
