ISIS releases infographic showing areas of global expansion, control
Islamic State (IS) has released an infographic which shows the extent of the group’s infiltration in various countries throughout the globe, on the second anniversary of its formation.
According to western media reports, in the immediate aftermath of the Istanbul airport attack which killed at least 41 people, the ISIS-affiliated Amaq News Agency has released a new propaganda infographic, showing the group’s expansion since it was formed two years ago.
The terrorist group divides the extent of its spread in different countries into three categories - areas of 'major control', 'medium control' and 'covert units'.
Syria and Iraq, where ISIS is rapidly losing ground due to concerted attacks by Western coalition forces, are the areas of ‘major control’.
Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Philippines, and some other countries are in the second category of areas of ‘medium control’.
France is the only country in Europe where ISIS has a ‘covert unit’. Some African and Asian countries including Niger, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh are in the ‘covert units’ category.
It is important to note that Islamic State has carried out attacks in all the countries mentioned, whether in major or medium control zones or the covert units zone.
On Wednesday, a suicide bomb attack on Ataturk airport in Istanbul killed at least 41 people and injured 239. Turkey has blamed ISIS for the attack, but the group has not yet admitted responsibility.
