4 teens held for superbike race
Kochi: The Ernakulam South police on Thursday arrested four teenagers including three minors, for holding a superbike race in Panampilly Nagar, here. The gang was held after two of them fell off their bike during a stunt.
Those arrested were identified as Shahabiz (19) of Puthivayath House in Fort Kochi, two 17-year-old boys, one from Chullikkal and the other from Palluruthy and a 16-year-old from Chullikkal.
According to the police, only Shahabiz had a licence. The gang was on two bikes. It was the 17-year-old from Palluruthy who skidded off the road during the race, injuring himself and the one riding pillion with him.
“The teenagers have been booked under Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 118E of the Kerala Police Act. This is for rash driving and licence-less riding. The charges are bailable and hence they will be released after 24 hours. However, their bikes will have to be produced in court. We will also take steps to cancel the licence of Shahabiz,” said Gopakumar, Sub Inspector of South police.
The incident occurred at the same place on K.C.Joseph Road where a man had died after being hit by a speeding super bike last week. Palluruthy-native Sunil Kumar, an employee of the Income Tax Department, was hit by two super bikes on Thursday last. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

‘Guidance can correct them’
Kochi: Dr. C.J. John, noted psychiatrist, who attributed the bike race craze of the young to their risk-taking behavior, opined that parental guidance can play a major role in curbing it.
Parents should concentrate on channelizing the energy of the youths into more creative areas like sports or cultural activities than gifting them with super-bikes,’’ he said.
Youngsters from affluent families who can afford luxury bikes are the culprits in most of the cases. Beside, the tendency among parents to cover up the violations committed by their children is making them think that they can get away with minimal punishment every time they commit traffic offences,” he added.
