Obese cops begin to trim down
Hyderabad: There are more than 5,000 obese cops in the state force out of 1 lakh police. According to top cops the overweight percentage would be around 30 per cent of total police men and women.
A weight loss programme is on in several units of the state police. Khammam, and Tirupati are leading the way with several cops having lost weight in the programme through slimming exercises and in some cases, even yoga.
Additional director general of police (coordination) V.K. Singh said, “So far, Khammam and Tirupati have been faring well in the weight reduction programme. We have been seriously working on it. Doctors and medical consultants will be monitoring them regularly. We are taking the staff to a picnic spot for walking to ensure that they exercise.”
Master health checkups conducted on policemen found that several of the men are addicted to alcohol. “We have conducted master health checkups of 78,657 police men and 14,584 spouses. In Kadapa, 10 policemen were found to have serious ailments and have undergone surgery,” said Singh.
The police has started giving marks to every police station on various parameters including clean toilets that will fetch them 20 marks. Police stations were also asked to improve the landscape and ambience surrounding the police stations.
