Cuddalore, Pondicherry on high alert

Warning issues as a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal approach Cuddalore.
Cuddalore: The third-stage cautionary signal No. 3 was raised in the Puduc­herry and Cuddalore ports on Friday following the formation of a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal. Official sources said the depression would move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast near Nagapattinam on Saturday evening.
Fishermen in Puduc­herry and Cuddalore have been advised not to venture into the sea until further announcements and people living along the coastline told to be cautious.
Cuddalore collector R. Kirlosh Kumar said the official machinery had been geared up to take all precautionary measures and a central control room had been opened in the Cudd­alore collectorate with toll-free numbers 1077 and (04142) 220655.
Cyclone shelters in the district have been kept ready to accommodate people in the event of any evacuation. Officials have been ask­ed to keep ready other public buildings like schools, colleges and marriage halls to accommodate people, he said adding that further steps would be taken based on the intensity of the depression.
The district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Cuddalore on Saturday. The territorial administration has also declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Saturday.
