BCom student pays for Kerala varsity blunder

Student was forced to waste a day and spend about Rs 500 to correct the university’s error.

Alappuzha: The Kerala University commits blunders often and the sufferers are the innocent students. Vineeth Pallipuram, a BCom student of Pallippuram NSS College, who applied for a provisional certificate, was given the certificate of a girl student by the university the other day.

He was forced to waste an entire day and spend about Rs 500 to correct the university’s error.

Vineeth was stunned when he got the certificate last week. On the advice of his teachers and friends he informed the BCom section in the university in Thiruvananthapuram about it.

The official concerned asked him to come to the office with the certificate by Monday.

Vineeth says: “I lost the classes of one day and about Rs 500 for travelling expense. When I reached the section in the university office, I witnessed a blame game between two officials. I was helpless to say anything. They did not say a word of regret but asked me to remit Rs 100 as fee for chellan which I refused as I had spent Rs 100 earlier while submitting the application. Later, one of them took a chellan by paying Rs 100. And subsequently they issued the right provisional certificate by evening. I also found another person with the same complaint there,’’ he says.

“This is a classic example of irresponsibility of university employees. Such incidents remain unreported because students don’t want to be victimised,’’ says Daniel Laiju, a social activist in Alappuzha.

The officials concerned should be punished or warned not to repeat such incidents, he added.
