No plan to change college name: Tamil Nadu goverment
Petition to change name of two colleges in memory of freedom fighters turned down by the TN government.
Chennai: The PWD has taken stÂeps to invite tenders for the construction of meÂmorials of freedom figÂÂhter and philanthrÂopist M. SingarÂavelar and socÂial reformer and ComÂmÂunist leader P. JeeÂvaÂrathinam in TonÂdiÂarpet, Fort-TondÂiarpet taluk.
The government infÂormed the Madras HC of this when a peÂtition fiÂled by A. GoÂwtÂhÂaman caÂme up for heariÂng before the first beÂnÂch, comprising of Chief JuÂstice R.K. Agrawal and M. SathiyÂanaÂraÂyaÂnÂan.
In the petition, GowÂthaman contended that Singaravelar (1860-1946) was an eminent advocate, who practised at MaÂdras HC, a freedom fighter, and floated several trade unions.
Hailing from a weaÂlthy family, his resideÂnce was at No 22, SoÂuth BeÂaÂch Road, Mylapore, now the Lady WellÂingÂton CoÂllÂege campus.
GoÂwtÂhÂaÂmÂan filed the petition prÂayÂing for a direÂctÂiÂÂon to the government to set up a memorial adjÂaÂcÂent to VivekaÂnaÂndar IlÂlÂaÂm and rename Lady WeÂlÂlington CollÂege as ‘Sindhanai Sirpi SinÂgaÂraÂvelar educational campus’.
The setting up of a Singaravelar statue and renÂaming the college caÂmpus was a matter of pÂolicy to be decided by the government and no suÂch proposal was penÂdÂing with the Tamil deÂveÂlÂoÂÂpment and informatiÂon (memorials) deÂpÂaÂrtÂmÂent, the officials suÂbÂmitted in the counter-afÂfiÂdavit.
The bench poÂstÂeÂd the matter for NovÂeÂmÂbÂer 21. The stÂatue of SiÂngarÂavelar in SiÂngÂarÂavÂelar Maligai is maintained prÂoÂperly and a bust is proÂpÂoÂsed to be erected in the memoÂrÂiÂal in Royapuram, Chennai.
