Cops set up combined control room to handle rain problems

Chennai: The city police have set up a combined control room by bringing in officials from the Chennai corporation and electricity board at its new headquarters to handle monsoon issues.

“The idea is to give relief to people who are affected by rain floods as early as possible. After a zone-level meeting with the corporation officials and city police officials, it was de­cided to set up a combined control room at old commissioner’s office in Egmore,” a senior police officer informed.

The city police had already identified low-laying areas in the city besides readying possible shelters for the affected people. On Sunday, we rec­eived calls from people in Egmore, Nungam­bak­kam and Vadapalani, said the officer.

People are used to calling the police when there is a crisis. So, we decided to have a combined control room so that it was easy to execute the solutions, he said.

“Mainly, pe­ople call for flooding and sewage leaks on the road. We coordinate the work with the civic body. Others call for mainly electricity-related iss­ues, like overhead cable sn­ap or electricity leak in stagnant water,” the officer said.
