Depression turns up the heat
Hyderabad: There was a sudden increase in the mercury levels in the city on Tuesday afternoon as a result of a depression that lies over the west-central Bay of Bengal, 430 km south-east of Visakhapatnam.
The recorded temperatures during the day touched almost 32 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, whereas the whole of last week saw temperatures ranging between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. The night temperature fell from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius.
“As a result of more clear skies leading to the earth receiving more sun energy, there is an increase in mercury levels. The next couple of days will see an increase in the temperatures over Telangana. And once the depression loses its effect, the minimum temperature will dip again,” said M. Narsimha Rao, assistant meteorologist at the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad.
South-coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive heavy rains as the depression is likely to move west and north-west, intensify into a deep depression, and cross the South Andhra and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coast between Chennai and Ongole around November 21 night. The depression will only intensify into a deep depression but not into a cyclonic storm. The depression is being tracked by the Met office.
“There is one depression that currently lies over west-central Bay of Bengal, 430 km south-east of Vizag as recorded at 14:30 hours. Due to this system, some heavy rains will occur over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.
After it crosses these areas, the track of it can be detected,” said Narsimha Rao. “For now, the depression has no major impact on Telangana. But, once the system crosses Visakhapat-nam, it can be judged. We are monitoring the situation continuously,” he added.
