Punished by Eflu, 2 seek UGC help

Two English and Foreign Language University students.

Hyderabad: Two English and Foreign Language University students, whose Non-Net fellowship amounts were cancelled for two months as punishment, have written to the University Grant Commission against the punishment orders of the institution.

Sandeep Patil, a PhD student of the English Language Education department, who was served the notice said, “In the month of Ramzan, there was no water in the hostel (C-Wing) for more than three days and it was a serious problem as many were fasting.

We had complained to the administration, but there had been no immediate response. One day, at around 4 am, I called Jayanth Dhupkar, who is incharge of hostel activities, but he did not respond positively and questioned me for calling him at that hour.

After two days, I was asked to give an explanation and then on November 18, I was served the fellowship cancellation notice.”
Another student, I.

Upender of Cultural Studies, who was also punished in a similar fashion, said, “During the counselling session for physically handicapped students, I had questioned a professor about giving admission to candidates who had no physical certificates. The university then asked me for an explanation and issued me the notice.”

The two received orders stating that the explanations given by them were found unsatisfactory by the Proctorial Board in its meeting. Patil and Upender were found guilty under Clause XXVII of Category 2 of Ordinance 13 of Eflu and their Non-Net fellowships were withdrawn for two months (amounting to '32,000).

The two have now written to the UGC. “It is the UGC that gives us the fellowship amount and Eflu cannot stop it and there is no report on what will be done with the money,” said Patil.

When contacted, Kona Prakash, member of the Proctor Committee, said that it was a decision taken by the Proctorial Board and so far, the students had not made any request to withdraw the notices. “In case the students request the orders to be withdrawn, a decision will be taken in the following meeting,” he said.
