Advanced technology to help cardio surgeries
Experts to develop advanced technology for effective cardiac surgery.
Chennai: With minimally invasive cardiac surgery gaining in popularity, experts are now focusing on developing better techniques to make it even more effective.
Many of the advanced techniques available and their applÂications were discÂusÂsed here on WednÂesday by eminent cardiologists from across the country and abrÂoad at an international complex coronary intervention (CCÂI)Â woÂrkshop organised by Apollo Speciality HÂospÂÂitals, Vanagram.
Explaining that in a case of chronic total occlusion performing minimally invasive surgery can be complicated , Dr. P. HarikÂrisÂhnÂan, senior consultant interventional cardiologist, said fortunately advanced techniques were now available to treat more complex cases.
“At the worÂkshop we dealt with special drilling and imaging techniques. A diamond drill is used to bore through a calcified coronary artery. If the channel is blocked we go in from the opposite direction,” he added. Noted Japanese cardiÂologist, Dr. YuiÂchi NÂoÂÂgÂuchi, who is alsÂo the general vice preÂsident of Tsukua MedÂical CeÂntre, spoke of proÂÂceÂdures like optÂicÂal coheÂrence tomÂograÂpÂhy (OÂCTÂ) and the retrogradÂe technique.
While traditional coronary artery bypass grÂafts (CABG) requÂired a hospital stay of over two weeks, the use of invasive meÂthods like percÂuÂtaÂneoÂus coronaÂry interÂvenÂtÂiÂon (PCÂI) cut down this time anÂd reduce the risks Â, he noted. “DuÂriÂng PCI a cardiologist feeds a defÂlated baÂlloon or other device on a catÂheter from the inÂguÂinal femoral arteÂry up through the bloÂod vesÂseÂls until they reach the site of the blockage in the heart,” he explained.
