Drop boxes to help lessen child abuse
Thiruvananthapuram: The committee appointed by the state government to suggest steps to curb child abuse has recommended setting up of drop boxes at schools for the purpose.
The report of the committee, appointed following the cruelty inflicted on the boy Shafeek of Idukki by his father and step-mother, was approved by the cabinet on Wednesday .
It wanted schools to encourage children to report their complaints or any instance of abuse or potential abuse through the drop box.
The drop box should be opened by the principal in the presence of one or two teachers, including the nodal teacher and school counsellor, the report said.
It also wanted the schools to provide the cost involved in providing special tuition fee and meeting the expenditure on excursion and picnic for abused children or children at high risk.
The amount spent on a child should not exceed Rs 3000 in a year. This amount should be met from the additional allocations from the state share of Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS).
