Goa MLA faces disqualification as MHA finds him Portuguese
New Delhi: An MLA in Goa may attract provisions of disqualification as the Home Ministry has found him to be a Portuguese citizen, thereby losing Indian nationality.
After a detailed verification with Portuguese government, the Home Ministry has found that Goa Vikas Party (GVP) legislator Caetano Silva had taken citizenship of Portugal and hence he ceased to be an Indian citizen.
The findings will be conveyed to the Bombay High Court which is hearing a case on Silva's citizenship, official sources said.
Silva's nationality was challenged by his rival in the Assembly election, Valanka Alemao, who had claimed that Silva got his birth registered in the civil registration office at Portugal on August 21, 2010 and as per that country's law, this amounts to acquisition of Portuguese citizenship.
