‘Hard to be both father, mother’, says Uday Kumar

ATM attack victim's husband finding it very difficult to divert his daughter's attention.
Bangalore: Uday Kumar, Jyothi’s husband who on Friday would have been celebrating their daughter’s third birthday, is now trying hard to divert his daughter's attention and console her that they could celebrate once her mother came back from a friend's place.
Jyothi, a bank manager, who was attacked and robbed by a gun and machete-wielding thief at a Corporation Bank ATM on JC Road early on Tuesday morning, is recuperating at BGS Global Hospital in Kengeri. Kumar has still not told their daughter that Jyothi was injured in the attack and is being treated at a hospital. Jyothi apparently was at the ATM on Tuesday to draw money to buy a dress for their daughter.
“It is really tough to be both a mother and father for our daughter, Atmika. As there is no one else at home, she has been staying at our relative’s house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar,” said Kumar.
Atmika has been asking her father about her mother and when her birthday would be celebrated. “I have not been able to meet Atmika since Jyothi has been admitted to the hospital. Atmika goes to a Montessori near our house. Whenever I talk to her over the phone, she keeps asking the same thing – about her mother and her birthday. I try to change the topic and promise her that I would get her more chocolates. I told her that Jyothi would be back home today. I have run out of excuses, and don’t know what else to tell her,” he said.
Kumar, who runs a lorry transport business, and Jyothi, a manager with the Corporation Bank Service Branch in the city, have been married for over five years. Kumar said, “We had a late marriage, and both of us don’t have our parents. Jyothi’s sister, who stays in Andhra Pradesh, rushed to the city soon after she came to know about the incident. She left on Friday. I have two brothers and two sisters, they all were in the city and they too have left. All this while, my and Jyothi’s friends have been very helpful.”
On Friday, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank S.R. Bansal came from Delhi and visited Jyothi at the hospital. Kumar said, “The Chairman assured me that all her medical expenses would be borne by the company. The bills will be reimbursed only after we submit the medical bills. Right now, I have to bear the expenses, which is getting extremely difficult. She has been admitted to the ICU and the charges are pretty steep. I thank all our friends, who have been helping us at this moment.”
The good sign is that Jyothi is recovering fast, say the doctors. Kumar said, “I spoke to her on Thursday and she can now identify people. The only thing she asked me was about Atmika and she told me to organise our daughter’s birthday. I tried consoling her, saying that once she is shifted to the general ward, we could get Atmika and celebrate her birthday at the hospital,” Kumar said.
No b’day party for Jyothi’s daughter
Bangalore: There were no candles to blow out, no birthday cake, no presents for three-year-old Atmika on Friday. All she knows is that her birthday celebration is on hold until her mother returns.
The adopted daughter of Corporation Bank Manager Jyothi, the victim of a brutal attack by a gun and machete-wielding thief at an ATM on Tuesday, little Atmika has turned to her father, lorry transport operator Uday Kumar for comfort, even as his focus is on paying for his wife's huge medical bills.
The CMD of Corporation Bank which employs Jyothi has assured him the bank would take care of his wife's medical expenses. "But it is reimbursed only after we present the bills. Right now, I have to bear the cost and I am finding it extremely difficult," Uday said.

Bangalore: A 33-year-old man, who resembles the assailant in the attack on Corporation Bank manager Jyothi Udaykumar at the bank’s ATM kiosk on JC Road on Tuesday, has been picked up for questioning at Tiptur in Tumkur district. The suspect, identified as Satish, is being questioned by the Bangalore police to ascertain whether he is the real assailant.
Satish is said to be a software engineer and has earlier been booked by the Tumkur district police in connection with the alleged dowry harassment death of his wife. On Friday, he was at a Tumkur court to attend a hearing related to the dowry death case. When he came out of the court, the city police took him for questioning. But it is still not clear whether he was the assailant involved in Tuesday’s brutal attack.
A youngster called up the police and tipped them off, saying he saw a man resembling Jyothi’s attacker near the court premises.
Apart from questioning Satish and Abusar alias Mazdur, the owner of Marvel computers and mobiles who purchased the victim’s mobile phone from the accused, the investigators have not got any vital clues about the real attacker even after three days of the incident. The eight police teams formed to probe the case are working on all possible angles.
The investigators are going through the pictures of criminals in the crime records bureau of the neighbouring states to check if the assailant is a habitual offender.
Meanwhile, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank S.R. Bansal visited the ATM kiosk where the manager was attacked and robbed. After visiting the victim at BGS Global Hospital, Bansal said, “The ATM kiosk where the incident happened is in a safe area. If incidents happen even in such safe places, it can happen anywhere.”
