Won’t interfere in kin’s life: MLA

Dharmapuri DMDK MLA says he will not interfere in daughter's life.
Chennai: The Dharmapuri DMDK MLA has given an undertaking to the Salem police that he will not interfere with the life of his daughter, who apprehended threats from him since she had married her lover against his wishes.
Additional government pleader S. Diwakar made his submission before Justice K.K. Sasidharan when the petition filed by B. Pavithira, seeking police protection to her and her husband came up for hearing.
As per the direction of this court, the Salem police was ready to provide protection to the petitioner. But, the whereabouts of the petitioner was not known, Diwakar added. R C. Paul Kanagaraj, counsel for the MLA A Baskar, submitted that the petitioner just completed 18 years and even according to her own affidavit, after her father came to know about her love affair, he made arrangements for her marriage.
There was no averment that he touched her. If police protection was given, they will chase away the parents. Anyway, the parents will be filing HCP, he added.
Following this, the judge directed the petitioner to appear before the Salem police commissioner on November 30 and on her appearance, the Salem commissioner was directed to provide necessary protection to her, the judge added and posted to next week, further hearing of the case.
According to Pavithra, she belongs to the Vanniyar community, and was doing her first year B.E in a private college. During her visit to her grandmother’s house in Omalur Taluk, she had an affair with a person named Arul, who belonged to the same community and was working in a private company.
Pavithra’s father, A. Baskar, was opposed to her love affair because of Arul’s poor economic condition. Her parents started harassing her and began making arrangements for her marriage with some other person.
Hence, she and Arul eloped and got married on November 20 at a temple as per Hindu rituals and ceremonies. On coming to know about the marriage, Pavithra’s parents, using their political influence, engaged henchmen to separate them.
They were thus facing a severe threat from her parents and hiding wherever they could. Friends providing them shelter were also threatened.
Therefore, Pavithra approached the Salem police commissioner to provide protection to her and her husband. But there was no proper response.
Hence, she filed the present petition to provide police protection for herself and her husband, she added.
