‘Karnataka most preferred for higher studies’
Bangalore: Karnataka has one of the highest Gross Enrollment Ratios (GER), density of institutes, and a good student pupil ratio, besides being the first choice of foreign students seeking higher education.
According to a survey conducted by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Private Limited (DTTIPL) and the industry body, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), 10,100 foreign students study in Karnataka, which is 36.7 per cent of foreign students studying in the country.
It is the leading state in attracting students from overseas, followed by Andhra Pradesh which attracts only 4700 students (17.06 per cent of the country’s total).
Karnataka has 43 universities making it the state with the fifth highest number of universities. The state also has the second highest number of state universities (23) and the third highest number of deemed universities (11). About 6.9 per cent of all universities in the country are located in Karnataka.
According to the survey, the state with 3,098 colleges has a share of 9.4 per cent of all colleges in India and ranks fourth in terms of total colleges.
It also states that 90 per cent of colleges in the State are affiliated to universities; the remaining are constituent/university colleges, PG/off campus or centres recognised by the universities. Some 66.3 per cent of colleges in the state are private, unaided, 20 per cent are government colleges and 13.5 per cent are private aided.
Male students outnumber female students: As per the report, the state-wise enrollment through regular mode at various levels is 16.06 lakh. The highest enrollment (73.1 per cent) is at under-graduate level, followed by diploma (13.8 per cent) and post-graduate (11.7 per cent), and all other levels at 1.4 per cent. The maximum enrollment share of 46.4 per cent is in private unaided colleges.
In terms of gender, enrollment is skewed. Some 53.8% of students are male and 46.2 per cent are female. The gender enrollment rate (GER) for males at 26.6 is higher than for females at 24.3, resulting in the gender parity index of 0.92, which is higher than the all-India figure of 0.86. In terms of overall GER, Karnataka ranks fourth in the country. The all-India GER of SCs (19.8) and STs (18) is lower than the state GER of 25.5.
Highest pupil teacher ratio (PTR): Under Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) the central government wants states to achieve a PTR of 15:1. But according to the survey findings, the PTR of colleges in Karnataka at 9.7 students per teacher is better than the all-India average of 15.1.
However, given the large number of colleges in the state, the number of teachers per college (42.5) and non-teaching staff per college (30.5) is less than the corresponding ratio at all-India level.
