Mahesh Dattani: We see women as inferior

Society views women as objects of sensuality as they are depicted in films from a commercial angle.

Kochi: Society views women as objects of sensuality as they are depicted in films from a commercial angle rather than as strong characters, opined internationally acclaimed playwright Mahesh Dattani.

On the anniversary of the Delhi gang-rape and murder which shamed the country, Dattani said from childhood “we see women as an inferior gender as they are depicted so in films.”

His new work, the essay ‘Me and my Plays’ which will be out next month, mainly focuses on a change in such a mindset. “The essay has two plays. Though there is no direct correlation to the Delhi rape incident, the message is against the inferior grading that society has towards women,” he said.

He flew down to the state to attend the three-day national seminar ‘Sites of resistance; Theory and Praxis’ from Tuesday organised by the English Department of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit.

Dattani noted that theatre art will make a comeback and emerging modern technology will only add to its popularity by way of technical effects.
