An ‘accent’ on artefacts

This decor products brand reflects the culture and heritage of India.

Surabhi Arora, Decor products designer

I’ve always been affected by interiors and the way a space makes me feel when I’m in it. Everything from lighting, texture, layout and colour leaves an impact on me. Because of my interest, I always enjoyed doing up the homes for my family members and friends. When I began designing accessories for homes and offices, it was to make sure that I wasn’t just filling up the space with poorly designed products. From a small coaster to a window blind or a wall art, I think every element in a room should be the “right” one.

I became a product designer to equip myself with the technical knowledge that was needed to design products that contribute to a beautiful space. In the process originated Accents, which is a reflection of my aesthetic values and has artifacts that transcend trends. In essence, it is an extension of my own identity. Pooja (Jain) joined me in 2012, with invaluable knowledge of state-of-the-art design techniques, production and technology.

Accents is now approaching its ninth year in business and provides a blend of conventional and modern-day design. Sangria is our newest collection.

The exotic charm of India is hard to ignore. We have always been appreciative of the diverse crafts associated with Indian culture and tried to translate the same into this line.

Inspired by the architecture of Indian forts and palaces, superimposed with antique zardozi embroidery, our new line is all about home accessories in deep hues, with wood frames and brass handles.

Our most vibrant and eclectic line yet, Sangria evokes a feeling of fun, playfulness, colour, warmth, texture and a “modern-vintage” look. It focuses on architecture — forts, palaces, havelis or mansions, tombs, temples and mosques and the designs and embellishments reflect the grandeur of Indian craftsmanship.

Serving trays with Indian monuments in the background, paisley and floral motifs, the richness of our heritage and mythology and the vibrant use of colours is the highlight of our collection, which also includes photo frames, boxes, coasters, tissue boxes, tea lights in varying sizes and designs. We are also extending our range to cushion covers, table runners and window dressings.

We try to express ourselves with the vibrant, enchanting and trendy side of India. And talking about our design sensibility, I can say that we are not inspired by one person or any artist. Rather, over the years, we’ve gained inspiration through travelling, discovering unique places, cultures, architecture, nature, and various art forms.

Fashion inspires us. We are inspired by the beauty and intricacy of traditional Indian workmanship and the exquisite materials one finds in different parts of the country. We try and infuse traditional Indian techniques in our work and develop items of everyday use.
