Greater Cochin Development Authority to take up sewage plant project
Kochi: When the city is facing several public health issues due to the lack of a permanent sewage disposal system, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has expressed interest in taking up the initiative to set up a treatment plant.
GCDA Chairman N.Venugopal said if the corporation was willing to provide two acres of land at its Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant site, the authority was ready to coordinate various agencies, which had already submitted proposals for setting up the facility.
“Several organisations including the Kerala Chamber of Commerce have come forward to set up a permanent sewage treatment plant. If land is given, the GCDA can facilitate setting up the plant without any financial commitment from the local body.
More than 100 acres of land at Brahmapuram can’t be used for any other purpose. While acquiring the land, the Government had made it clear that the area could be used for the construction of a sewage treatment facility and a slaughter house,” said Venugopal.
Untreated sewage is fast becoming a serious public health problem and the civic authorities are sitting on proposals to set up de-centralised treatment plants across the city.
Meanwhile, corporation town planning committee chairman K.J Sohan said setting up a septic waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram would not be feasible due to the objection from local residents.
